The importance of Synbiotic

A synbiotic is a term given to a combination of both prebiotics and probiotics in one product

A Synbiotic food helps to improve the gut health of your child, promoting a healthy intestinal microbiota.

structure of a healthy intestinal microbiota

It may come as a surprise to some that the friendly bacteria living naturally inside your child’s gut can influence various aspects of their health, including digestion, immune health, skin health and mental wellbeing.

Your child’s intestinal microbiota is established over the first few years of their life but it continues to change and adapt to their diet, lifestyle and environment.

Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum CECT5716 (L. Fermentum) – a unique probiotic

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are microorganisms that help populate the digestive tract to aid in overall health.

Probiotics supports  immune health by stimulating the body’s natural defences, and by lining the intestines with a protective layer of friendly bacteria that bars pathogenic substances in the gut from harming the body.

As 90% of the immune system is managed in the gut, it may be important to keep one’s probiotic levels high.

Probiotics are also known to improve the absorption of vitamins & minerals into the bloodstream. In addition, ‘bad’ strains of bacteria, known as pathogens, can be crowded out by probiotics, the ‘good’ strains of bacteria, so they help to complement and support the health of the gut microbiome.

While probiotics are commercially plentiful these days, not all probiotics are the same. The ideal probiotics to choose will largely depend on the probiotic survivability and nutrition support needs of your child.

L. fermentum, a bacterium that belongs to the first colonisers of the intestine

  • proven to survive the gastrointestinal passage in high numbers and displays high adhesion to intestinal cells.
  • supports the integrity of the intestinal mucosa;
  • protects against intestinal infections;
  • contributes to immune system modulation;
  • influences maternal mastitis;
  • is safe and effective in infants;
  • has a well-characterised and fully sequenced genome.

Did you know – HiPP Organic Combiotic is shipped in a controlled temperature all the way from Germany. This is to ensure that the milk formula is not exposed to high temperature during transit and thus affecting the survivability of the probiotics.

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) – a tried and tested prebiotic

What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics, are indigestible natural fibres, typically types of carbohydrates. The human body can’t break these fibres down, so they provide little/no calorific value. Whilst we can’t digest them, the probiotics in our gut microbiome love to feast on prebiotic fibres.

Besides probiotic lactic acid bacteria, the availability of prebiotic substances as the second important building block is significant for the intestinal microbiota imprint.

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are gained from milk sugar (lactose) and have been used in the food industry for over 30 years.

They pass through to the lower regions of the intestine, to the colon, where they can be metabolised by the “good” bacteria (lactobacilli and bifidobacteria).

the following properties if GOS are scientifically proven:

  • beneficial influence on microbiota and stool habits
  • prebiotic effect
  • good tolerance and safe for use in infants

GOS vs FOS?

Fructose, which is only present in vegetable foodstuffs such as chicory, leek, onions and bananas, serves as the base substance for fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin.

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are gained from milk sugar (lactose) and have been used in the food industry for over 30 years.

HiPP uses GOS as a prebiotic substance in our Milk formula because these substances are more closely related to the milk oligosaccharides than the vegetal fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS).

Especially valuable for Children born via C-section

Caesarean delivery can be a lifesaving intervention for both mother and child. However, the mode of delivery may have implications on a child’s nutrition support needs. During c-section delivery, the initial transfer of maternal probiotics from the mother to the child via the birth canal is bypassed.

Maternal probiotics are the “friendly” microorganisms that help jumpstart a child’s early immune system development, cognitive function, and digestive health. When a child is delivered by c-section, they acquire a different set of microorganisms from the mother’s skin or the environment where they were born.

The good news is that the absence of probiotic transfer during C-section delivery may be corrected through consumption of probiotics and prebiotcs.
