Pink October: Busting the Myth about Breast Checks before 40

In Singapore, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, with about 1 in 13 women likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime. The good news? Early detection saves lives, and the earlier it’s found, the better the chances of recovery.

Know When to Start Checking

There are three key ways to keep your breast health in check, and each starts at a different stage of your life:

  1. Breast self-examination
Start in your 20s. Once a month, ideally a few days after your period, gently feel for lumps, skin dimpling, or nipple changes. The goal isn’t to find cancer, but to know your body so you’ll notice any unusual change early.
  2. Clinical breast examination (
From your 20s and 30s, have a doctor or nurse examine your breasts every 1–3 years, and then annually once you hit 40.
  3. Mammogram screening
This is what the “after 40” guideline refers to.
    • Ages 40–49: Once a year (because breast tissue is denser)
    • Ages 50–69: Once every two years

So it’s not true that you should wait till 40.
👉 You can start self-checking in your 20s, get doctor checks in your 30s, and begin mammograms from 40 onwards.

Why Early Detection Matters

Breast cancer is highly treatable when found early. Women diagnosed at Stage 1 have over 90% survival rates, but many skip screening because they feel healthy or assume they’re “too young.”

Knowing your normal saves lives.
